Louise Appell, PhD
Advisor on Matters of Grant Writing
Louise Appell is a retired vice president of Macro International, a contract research firm located in the Washington, D.C Metro area. Her role there was to prepare proposals that win the funds necessary to do the research. She also led a team of 30 people to conduct the research and support the effort.
Dr. Appell’s primary interest has always been in educating children with disabilities, particularly the research and development that leads to instructional materials and strategies that work for students who are challenged. While at Macro, interest in using computers as an instructional tool was burgeoning and she was among the first of those who developed instructional materials to use this new asset including a program to teach social skills to special needs students. This project, funded by the U.S. Dept of Education, was demonstrated at the International Congress on Special Education in Beijing, China. Other, similar projects were demonstrated at international meetings in New Delhi, India, London, England, Brussels, Belgium, Paris, France, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Prior to Macro, Dr. Appell taught at the University of Kentucky, The Catholic University in Washington, D.C. and Trinity College, also in Washington, D.C. Later she served as Associate Director of the National Committee on Arts for the Handicapped (NCAH). This was a new non-profit at the time and has since changed its name to Very Special Arts. At NCAH, her skill in winning proposals brought in the money to develop a program featuring artists working directly with people who are profoundly multi-handicapped, as well as many more research and development projects.
Louise Appell holds a B.A. from Smith College and both an M.A. and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky.
